Master’s degree in Marine Biology
Learning period: Research track: Up to 3 years | Registration Status: Open for Fall semester 2021-2022 | Department web site
Oceans cover 70% of the earth’s surface. They are abundant with life and hold within them valuable natural resources that may be used as sources of food, energy, and medicines in future generations. Most oceans and seas have not been researched yet, despite their great importance to the future of mankind. The University of Haifa’s Department of Marine Biology offers interdisciplinary Master of Science and Ph.D. programs that combine courses in marine biology, molecular biology, ecology, and oceanography, with field work and advanced laboratory research in various areas of marine biology. These studies enable department graduates to use their knowledge and research skills to monitor the oceans, understand the processes of change taking place within them, and to guide decision-makers toward preserving the marine heritage and environment.
A Bachelor of Science in biology, marine sciences, or related science fields, from a recognized academic school in Israel or abroad. Required knowledge includes: biochemistry, physiology, ecology, molecular biology, English and computer skills. A minimum grade point average of 85 in each of the student’s B.Sc. majors. Students will submit their CV, a declaration of intentions, formal transcript, and official copy of their B.Sc. degree. Candidates found suitable will be called for an interview.

Enrolled students who have not chosen an instructor will be required to perform a rotation between three laboratories, working for at least 50 hours in each of them during a period of one month.
Candidates holding a B.Sc. degree from other fields or lacking required prior knowledge, can be accepted “on probation” subject to the decision of the department’s M.Sc. studies committee, and under the condition that they complete all requirements within their first year in the program with a grade point average of 85. These requirements will be decided by the committee according to the student’s background.
