The
University of Haifa, the only liberal
arts university in northern
Israel, serves a student body that is the most pluralistic in
the country. Most students study within the framework of one
of six Faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences and Mathematics,
Law, Education, Social Welfare and Health Studies and Science
and Science Education .
The verdent Mt. Carmel National
Park surrounds the University campus. The view over Haifa Bay
and north to the
mountains of the Galilee offers a most pleasant learning
environment.
Ensconced within this natural
setting are the Campus buildings, with the new
Rabin Building being the flagship. Modern classrooms with top
class teaching aids render a superb atmosphere. With all these
remarkable features and services, it's no wonder that more than
13,000 students have gathered here to attain their academic
degrees.
The Safdie Auditorium hosts
conferences, seminars
and other assemblies held at the University. A constant stream
of researchers, domestic and foreign, congregate here to investigate
and learn of others experience and discoveries.
Off to a lunch break? A dozen
cafeterias and diners, from Chinese to Italian to middle-eastern,
offer a definite solution for the gastronomical
minded. If you're finished, we can continue on our course.
The Reuben and Edith Hecht
Museum's permanent archaeological exhibition is based on the
private collection of the late Dr. Reuben Hecht, which he donated
to Haifa University. The exhibition concentrates on the subject
of "The People of Israel in Eretz Israel". Items on the lower
floor are displayed in chronological order, beginning with the
Chalcolithic period and ending with the Mishnaic and the Talmudic
Era (Roman and Byzantine periods). The upper floor is devoted
to thematic displays, such as coins, seals, weights and jewelry.
A central exhibition consists of finds from the excavations
of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
Among community projects initiated
by the University are several having as their objective the
encouragement of mutual understanding and cooperation between
the Jewish and Arab populations on and off campus. The latter
is an area in which the University of Haifa has been a pioneer
and leader in the cause of
peace.
